Build Better / Roofing Underlay Update Webinar 2025

Choosing the Right Underlay for Your Project

Kingspan Thermakraft has updated its guidance on the use of synthetic absorbent roof and wall underlays. This follows extensive testing within our own laboratory facility in Auckland, as well as independent third-party testing.

During October 2024, Kingspan Thermakraft advised the market that applications such as canopies, lean-tos and soffits and open-bay sheds are not warranted for an underlay. This followed guidance from the NZ Metal Roof and Wall Cladding Code of Practice, Section 10.11.2, that states that, "Underlays are not required in unlined structures…".

From 1 July 2025, synthetic absorbent underlays (such as the Thermakraft Covertek range) will be limited to use in lined buildings only. This update follows internal testing and independent verification, which identified that exposure to UV (direct and reflected) in unlined structures can cause premature degradation of these products.
